As we power through fall and into winter, my time on the bike has significantly reduced. I used to ride anywhere from 45 to 80 miles a week and this past Saturday was the first time I was on the bike in the last two months. One of the reasons my group of friends don’t ride anymore is that after work it’s simply too dark. There are long stretches on our route that are in complete darkness and that’s never a safe situation.

Light & Motion, a company from picturesque Monterey, CA has been tackling the issue of darkness by providing illumination solutions for cyclists and underwater videographers. I am really digging their Seca line of high performance lights. The number on each of their models refers to lumens rating, or simply how much light is put out the front. The Seca 700 Race outputs a staggering 700 lumens from its five LED’s. In comparison, a Mag 3D puts out a measly 76 lumens. It has has three brightness levels, as well as a fast-switching race mode, and is able to shine on high for an impressive 3.5 hours before needing a charge. It uses a 6-cell Li-ion battery pack that fills in just 2.5 hours making it perfect for long commutes and a favorite among 24-hour racers. The kit comes complete with full mounting accessories for your handlebar and helmet.

In use, I found that I rarely needed to go past the medium mode. The beam pattern is very wide, giving me light at nearly a 180 degree sweep. The beam shape is odd, not concentric like you might be used to from a flashlight. There is little artifacting, thanks to the parabolic reflector design. The whole body acts as a heatsink, with fins serving both design and practical purposes. I noticed inductor whine at the high level, but that was only in a perfectly quiet room, standing still. Mounted on a moving bike, I am certain the rider would not notice.

If you are looking for a high-output, rechargeable light system for your bike, and you’re willing to make an investment ($549 MSRP), I would recommend the Seca 700. And, if you need something to just jot down to the market and you are going to be mostly be riding under streetlamps, the company has wide range of products to help you there as well.

It’s All New: New Products, New Website

You may have heard about our all-new line of LED lights for 2008. But did you know that they’re 100% new? No product was left untouched. Seca is new from the ground-up, Stella has received two new models, a face-lift and a brighter LED emitter, and Vega has a new price point and a freshly redesigned shape.

In addition to an all-new product line, we’ve overhauled our website to make sure that visitors get the information that they’re looking for as quickly as possible. That means fewer clicks, less scrolling and multiple pictures of each light system right there on a single page.

Light & Motion also wants to be your information resource for education on portable, recreational lighting. We’ve added a Knowledge section, designed to make battery chemistries, lumens and beam patterns easier to understand. Our goal is to educate our customers about lighting and to convey the joy of riding at night. It’s through this education that you’ll see the advantages that Light & Motion has in the marketplace.

Most importantly, we’ve improved our Contact Form, and will continue to work on developing the website to allow our customers to interact with us. We want to hear your feedback; opening up a dialogue so that we can continue to grow and improve as a company.

We thank you for your time and for your support.

Seca is Here!

After thousands of hours of engineering and several hundred more hour testing on the trails, Light & Motion’s Seca was introduced to the public at the Interbike trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada on Wednesday, September 24th, 2008.

When the bike light design team sat down during the latter part of last year, our agenda was to develop a light that would follow the ARC at the top of our product line. With that goal, came a lot of responsibility. After all, the ARC had been perched atop the recreational lighting market for several years, and was durable, reliable and really stinkin’ bright. Anything that followed had to surpass these characteristics—and that was a tall order.

It was obvious to Light & Motion that LED’s were the wave of the future. We had started working on LED lighting back in 2004 with our commuter light, Vega. In 2007 we raised the bar by introducing the Stella, our compact single LED system— a go-anywhere, do-anything light system. We explored multiple directions for Seca, opting to go with a multi-LED head using a parabolic reflector and port design. This gave us the power that we wanted, the ability to shape the beam pattern precisely for cycling, and it used a reliable heat-sink design to give our customers the dependability that they are used to from a Light & Motion system.

For 2008, Seca is available in three different models:

Seca 700 Ultra, 700 lumens of light output with the 9-cell Li-ion battery pack, monster 5.0-hour run-times on High, tool-free handlebar/helmet mounts and a quick 3.5 hour recharge time.

Seca 700 Race, 700 lumens of light output with a 6-cell Li-ion battery pack, 3.5-hour run-times on High, tool-free handlebar/helmet mounts and a fast 2.5-hour recharge time (this is our 24-hour racing weapon!).

Seca 400, providing 400 lumens of light and a flyweight 3-cell Li-ion battery, 2.5-hour run-time on High, tool-free handlebar/helmet mounts and an unbelievably speedy 1.75-hour recharge time. To top it all off, the entire package weighs just 380g! (0.84 lb)
